Introduction: A New Chapter 🌱

Ever thought about what it means to downsize and live in a tiny home? For me, it meant returning to my roots and embracing a simpler life. This is the story of my journey to transform a tiny house in my parents' backyard into a cozy haven.

🛠️ Finding My Space

The Decision to Move Back

After struggling with mental health during my university years, I realized it was time for a change. I moved back to my parents' house in March 2022, thinking it would be a temporary solution. But I craved independence and space.

Discovering Tiny Living

While on holiday in England, I stayed in a tiny house and fell in love with the concept. When I returned home, I knew I wanted to create my own tiny space.

💰 Budgeting for My Tiny Home

The Purchase

In November, I found a secondhand tiny home online for €1,800.40 (around $1,963). With help from my parents, I bought it and decided to set it up in their backyard due to strict local regulations.

Renovation Challenges

Initially, I estimated renovation costs at around €1,000, but it ended up being over double that. My parents and friends helped, using materials we found or already had.

“We used wood from a trash bin to make a window frame. It felt good to recycle!”

🌈 The Cozy Outcome

Living in the Tiny House

Now, after nearly 11 months of living in my tiny home, I cherish my independence. It’s a snug seven-square-meter space with a kitchen, bed, and living area—though I still dream of having my own bathroom!

“Living here has been a wonderful journey. I feel safe and comfortable in my own space.”

Financial Freedom

Without the burden of high rent—previously €419—I pay my parents €60 a month for utilities. This financial relief has allowed me to save money and focus on my mental health.

📅 Future Plans

I work on a care farm and plan to return to university next year. I envision moving my tiny house closer to campus, keeping that cozy, independent vibe alive.

🌟 Conclusion: Embracing the Journey

Living in a tiny house has been transformative. I’ve learned to appreciate the small things and have found a sense of community in my family.
